Beautiful Boscastle
Sitting on the north Cornish coast, the beautiful village of Boscastle is always high on the list to visit when staying in Cornwall or living locally.
The Only Commercial Port For 40 Miles
During the 19th century, Boscastle was a busy commercial port; in fact the only port for a forty-mile stretch of coastline, where boats could pull into a safe harbour. Ketches & schooners transported various goods through the port from both Bristol & South Wales… and even from much further afield with timber imported from Cananda.
Horse-drawn carts met the ships and brought the goods up through steep-sided valleys to the surrounding villages for onward distribution.
The port started a decline when the railways reached nearby Camelford in 1893 – and like many Cornish locations, the railways also brought tourists from throughout the UK and today Boscastle remains a firm favourite with beautiful harbour & coastal walks and breathtaking scenery.
The Devastating Floods of 2004
On 16th August 2004, 75 mm of rain (the usual average for the whole month of August) fell across the hillsides surrounding both Boscastle & nearby Crackington Haven. Both villages were deluged when the rivers Valency & Jordan were overwhelmed. More than 100 cars swept into the sea, and several of the Village’s iconic buildings were damaged or destroyed.
Today, with a sympathetic rebuild & restoration, along with a flood-prevention scheme, visitors would never be aware of what had happened just over 20 years ago.
Aside from Boscastle’s natural beauty, there are a collection of places to eat, drink and shop as well as The Museum of Witchcraft & Magic – a spell-binding collection which has been located in the Village since 1960.
Our Suggested Lunch Stop
After a major refurbishment, St. Austell Brewery re-opened The Wellington in April 2025 – now offering 20 bedrooms and a large interior & courtyard dining area, with an all-day menu. It’s a perfect spot, set back from the harbour & village centre (by just a few steps) – you can enjoy lunch or your favourite Cornish pint and watch the world go by.
